Goulburn Hockey Grandstands
Easily accessible from Sydney and Canberra, Goulburn Hockey Centre is a world class facility. Goulburn has been a proud hockey town for many years and now the centre is upgraded to a world class standard.
Requirement:
New Grandstand Seating at Goulburn Hockey Centre
In August 2023, Grandstands Australia was contacted by Mandi Smith, Secretary of the Goulburn Districts Hockey Association, with a clear vision: to improve the spectator experience at their No. 1 Synthetic Field. The Association had recently been successful in securing a sports grant and wanted to invest in high-quality, durable grandstand seating.
This project carried both professional and personal meaning. Having grown up playing hockey in Crookwell and Goulburn, I knew how important well-designed spectator seating is for fostering community engagement and supporting local sport. The goal was to create a safe, long-lasting, and comfortable seating solution that could serve the Association for many years while fitting within the site’s unique layout.
The site presented specific challenges. With two large light towers dominating the field area, the available footprint for seating was restricted. It was essential to identify a design that would maximise viewing capacity, comply with Australian safety standards, and seamlessly fit within the infrastructure. The Association required a supplier that could provide not only the seating but also engineering support and guidance on site preparation.
Another key requirement was value for money. As the seating was funded through a community sports grant, the Association needed an option that combined robust construction, easy installation, and low maintenance. Grandstands Australia was engaged to provide both the design and manufacturing expertise to deliver on these needs.
Solution:
Grandstands Australia Aluminium Grandstand Seating
After the initial consultation and an on-site assessment with Mandi, our design team quickly determined that the ideal option was two GS4-12m 4-tier aluminium grandstands. This configuration would deliver ample seating while working around the restrictions posed by the existing light towers.
We prepared a detailed quote and proposal, which the Association accepted, with the official order placed in February 2024. To ensure long-term stability and compliance, our structural engineers supplied detailed slab specifications. The Association took responsibility for preparing and pouring the concrete foundations, while our team prepared the prefabricated seating packs at our Sydney facility.
Although wet weather caused some delays in the curing of the concrete slabs, our in-house manufacturing process allowed us to remain ready to deliver as soon as the site was prepared. All structural components were fabricated using our proven aluminium system – strong, lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and compliant with the Australian Building Code.
In May 2024, once the foundations were ready, we delivered the seating packs to site using our specialised crane truck. This ensured safe and efficient transport, reducing disruption for the local community. The assembly process was managed by a builder who was a member of the Association. Thanks to our easy-to-follow installation instructions and modular design, the seating was assembled quickly and without complication.
By combining local involvement, professional engineering, and precision manufacturing, the project was completed smoothly. The Association was able to leverage the sports grant funding effectively, ensuring maximum return on investment.
Result:
Grandstands Spectator Seating
The completed grandstands are now a valuable asset for the Goulburn Districts Hockey Association, providing comfortable, safe, and accessible seating for players’ families, supporters, and the broader community. Positioned on the No. 1 Synthetic Field, the two GS4-12m 4-tier units have transformed the venue into a more professional and spectator-friendly facility.
The benefits have been immediate:
- Consistent use: The grandstands are now in constant use throughout the week and weekends, accommodating crowds at both junior and senior games.
- Enhanced atmosphere: Having structured seating brings spectators closer to the action, creating a more vibrant and engaging environment for players and fans.
- Community value: The investment demonstrates how sports grant funding can directly benefit local communities by improving infrastructure that encourages participation and pride in local sport.
- Durability and safety: Built from high-grade aluminium with non-slip treads and engineered stability, the grandstands will deliver long-lasting value with minimal maintenance.
This project highlights Grandstands Australia’s ability to deliver tailored seating solutions that fit the unique requirements of local sporting associations. From design consultation and engineering support through to manufacturing and delivery, we ensured the Association had everything needed to complete the installation with confidence.
The Goulburn hockey community now enjoys facilities that rival much larger venues, proving that with the right planning and support, regional sporting organisations can achieve big results.
For sporting clubs and associations across Australia seeking to upgrade their facilities, this project serves as a strong example of how Grandstands Australia can help turn a grant-funded opportunity into a lasting community legacy.
