Cloncurry is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Cloncurry, Queensland, Australia. It is informally known by local people as The Curry. Cloncurry is known as the Friendly Heart of the Great North West and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2017.Wikipedia

Requirement

We were contacted by John Doody, Project Manager for Cloncurry Shire Council in December 2022. John had a dilapidated undercover grandstand at the Eddie Lee Field at the Cloncurry Recreational Reserve. An inspection for Insurance Compliance had shown the existing Grandstand was not up to ‘code’ and too far gone to save.

John did some Google research and found the Grandstands Australia project at

Les Stagg Oval in Proserpine. It was exactly what they needed, so, with a few phone calls, a site measure by John, and some emails we quickly established that a GS4-18m 8tier grandstand was the ticket.

Solution

We needed our Structural Engineers to establish the specifications for the concrete slab. This slab not only serves as the structural foundation for the grandstand, but also as the ‘anchor’ to hold it on the ground during a high wind event. The concrete slab footing specified was 150mm thick with SL82 mesh in the top with 30mm cover.

Having the Structural Certificate was pivotal to the Councils’ decision to go with Grandstands Australia as it was necessary for Insurance and OH&S compliance.

Grandstands Australia received the order in early February 2023 and swung into action.

As Cloncurry is so remote, (Central West Gulf, QLD), we needed to deal with freight and safe delivery. After a search we found that Danijela from Connect Freight Express could get our grandstands picked up in Ingleburn and delivered straight through to the Council Depot in Cloncurry. This was outstanding as the goods were loaded by us in a safe way and were not on and off different trucks at depots all the way up. The truck was loaded on Wednesday 3/5/23 and goods arrived safely at Cloncurry on Friday 5/5/23.

The Council contracted a local builder to assemble the Grandstand using our simple to understand instructions. This was completed without a hitch. The council is delighted with the grandstand, and it should serve the Cloncurry Community for decades to come.

I checked in with John a few weeks later by email to ask him how it all went. In simple Aussie fashion, his reply was – ‘Hi Brian, see attached pictures, grandstand in place & in use, and looks great.’

As a sideline, during manufacture of the grandstands Samantha Kelley, the Principal from St Joesph’s Catholic School in Cloncurry contacted us. She interested in another 5 x T1000 tables to add to their last order. With good communications we were able to send the tables on the same truck and save the school some money on freight. Moreover, the Council received the tables for the school, and I believe they also dropped them off for them. Another great Aussie country town community story!
