Grandstands Australia – City of Gold Coast Council Enhancing Spectator Experiences
In August 2024, the City of Gold Coast Council approached us with a pressing challenge at Ashmore Oval. The existing spectator seating used by the Southport Warriors FC was in very poor condition. More importantly, it was unsafe and no longer compliant with Australian building codes.
The solution was not simply about replacing old seats with new ones—it was about delivering a modern grandstands system that would restore safety, compliance, and comfort while enhancing the entire game-day atmosphere.
The Challenge: Unsafe and Outdated Grandstand Seating
The old seating at Ashmore Oval had been constructed into the slope of a hill and set within a concrete dugout. Over time, the dugout deteriorated, and as it crumbled, it caused the rest of the seating structure to become unstable.
Key problems included:
- Structural risk: The concrete dugout was collapsing, making the seating unsafe for use.
- Non-compliance: The structure no longer met current codes, creating liability risks for the Council and the club.
- Poor usability: Sightlines were affected, and overall comfort was far below expectations for a modern sporting venue.
Phil King, from City of Gold Coast Council, knew the issue required urgent attention but was unsure which grandstands solution would best suit the site while keeping it functional, durable, and compliant.
The Site Visit: From Problem to Grandstand Clarity
Fortunately, timing aligned well. Brian, one of our project leads, had a delivery scheduled in Brisbane and was able to meet Phil at Ashmore Oval for a site inspection.
The onsite assessment confirmed that the dugout could not be repaired. The only long-term solution was to:
- Remove the unsafe dugout.
- Construct a new block wall filled with concrete on top of a reinforced slab.
- Install a durable aluminium grandstands system that would meet code and provide excellent spectator comfort.
Through these discussions, the decision was made to supply and install two GS4 – 16.5m four-tier grandstands, carefully aligned with the height of the new wall to ensure clear sightlines from the clubhouse behind the field.
The Solution: Two GS4 – 16.5m Four-Tier Grandstands
The GS4 model is one of our most popular grandstands for councils, schools, and sports clubs because of its robust design and versatility. For Ashmore Oval, it was the perfect fit.
The GS4 offers:
- Compliance and safety: Fully engineered and certified to Australian standards, with features such as non-slip treads, vision-impaired bull noses, and safety rails.
- Durability: Aluminium construction ensures low maintenance and resistance to corrosion.
- Spectator comfort: With four seating tiers, the GS4 provides excellent visibility and comfort across all rows.
- Ease of installation: Modular design allows council contractors to assemble using straightforward, step-by-step instructions.
By choosing GS4 grandstands, the Council achieved a solution that not only resolved safety issues but also elevated the overall spectator experience.
Smooth Grandstand Delivery and Installation
Once the design was confirmed, the order was placed in February 2025. The grandstands were manufactured, shipped in early April 2025, and delivered complete with comprehensive assembly instructions.
Council contractors undertook the installation, reporting a smooth and efficient build process. The modular nature of the GS4 grandstands meant minimal disruption to the site and fast turnaround, ensuring the facility was ready for the sporting season.
The Result: A Venue Transformed – New Grandstand
A follow-up conversation with Phil King confirmed the project was a complete success. The Southport Warriors FC and their supporters now enjoy:
- Safe, code-compliant seating for players, families, and fans.
- Durable aluminium grandstands that will last for decades with minimal maintenance.
- Improved spectator amenity, with excellent sightlines and comfort across all seating tiers.
The transformation of Ashmore Oval has been welcomed by the community. What was once a liability has now become a point of pride, demonstrating the value of modern, well-engineered grandstands in revitalising local sporting facilities.
Conclusion
The Ashmore Oval project showcases how practical engineering and quality design from Grandstands Australia can enhance community sporting venues. By installing two GS4 – 16.5m four-tier grandstands, the City of Gold Coast Council delivered a safe, durable, and visually appealing solution that significantly improves the spectator experience.
For councils, schools, and clubs seeking reliable seating solutions, GS4 grandstands provide the perfect balance of safety, longevity, and comfort—ensuring every game is enjoyed to the fullest.
